I attended a watercolor workshop a couple of weeks ago put on by Nan Henke, a local artist here in the Texas Hill Country. As I am a self-taught artist I try to attend as many workshops that I have time to attend and money to spend.
Nan’s workshop was informative and fun! Focusing on basics and painting a loose landscape made everyone feel comfortable and successful at watercolors.
My personal takeaways were:
-
-
-
- You don’t need expensive brushes to get good results
- Dab, wash, dab when cleaning a brush or adding water
- Practice, practice practice
- Have fun and experiment—It builds confidence

Nan offers classes each month and rotates her venue between Fredericksburg, TX and San Antonio, TX. She’s also invited her students to the Fredericksburg Art Guild on days she’s in residence to have an “open studio”.
Finally, as one of her students I’m eligible to submit a work for the annual adult student art show at the FBG Art Guild next February! The painting I completed in her class is at the top of this article.
What do you think? Should I enter it into the show? I look forward to hearing back from you.
In the mean time, go make some art!
