McCall RV Resort
We arrived at the McCall RV Resort in McCall, ID after a drizzly, rainy drive from Baker City, OR. The nice thing about the rain was it cooled down the temperature and once we arrived, the rain stopped.
McCall RV Resort is one of the best laid out RV resorts we’ve been to so far and truly lives up to the moniker of RESORT. Sites are spread out, wide, long and well-manicured. Amenities included a pool, showers, laundry and clubhouse. The workampers here are helpful and friendly and a joy to meet and talk with. One of the top “likes” the resort gets on its critiques is the daily trash pickup.
McCall RV Resort is definitely on our radar for a return trip and perhaps even a workamping gig.
What To Do In McCall
McCall, Idaho is a town rich in history and one of the well-kept outdoor secrets in Idaho. Keith first came here several years ago to fly in the Frank Church River of No Return National Wilderness with McCall Canyon/Mountain Flying Seminars and immediately fell in love with the town and its inhabitants. After getting settled we drove over to the airport to see if the office was open to touch base with the owner Lori MacNichol.
It was late in the afternoon and the office was closed so next order of business was to drive Ilene around town and show her Payette Lake and the surrounding area. I think it was love at first sight.
We managed to see Lori the next day for a few minutes and had enough time to take photos of helicopters across the runway working the fire up North near Riggins, ID. It was nice catching up with her but our time was short since she was entertaining an old friend that week.
We kicked up our kayaking a notch on Wednesday by renting a tandem kayak and spent four hours boating the river just North of Payette Lake. We’re pretty sure tandem is the way to go especially since the dismount was much drier with this kayak!
Hiking, walking, shopping along Lake Street and dining at bistros and coffee shops kept us entertained this week and just hanging around the RV resort was a pleasure. We managed to stop into one of the local breweries for a taste of Idaho as well. Broken Horn Brewing Company has a small, but nice tasting room and their Hell’s Canyon Jalapeño Ale is awesome!
McCall Smokejumper Base
McCall has been home to the McCall Smokejumpers Base since 1943. During the summers they give tours and we took advantage of their hospitality on Thursday afternoon. Unlike the Missoula Smokejumpers Base where we were hosted by a college intern, at McCall it was a smokejumper giving us the tour. Travis did a great job showing us around, telling us about what it takes to become a smokejumper and giving as a chance to go inside their Twin Otter and CASA aircraft. If you’re in McCall, we highly recommend this tour.
The weather all week was clear and warm during the day and cool at night; just right for sound sleeping. As our stay drew to a close, the clouds moved in and tomorrow when we leave we’re threatened with rain. Oh well, it was worth the trip and we’re sure to be back!
