The Big Island and Volcanoes

The first stop in Hawaii was Hawaii, the big island!

We booked a bus tour that would take us to the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. Needless to say Ilene got her National Park Passport stamped and we had the opportunity to see an active volcano (which began erupting in May!) and learn how the volcanoes were such a part of Hawaiian native history and culture.

The beauty of this island comes from volcanoes and we were in awe of the flowers and vegetation wherever we went…remember, we’re from the desert!

Oh, and let’s not forget our stop at the Mauna Loa Macadamia Nut Factory on the way out to the park. It was a bit drizzly, normal for the island, when we arrived so naturally we needed to stay in the gift shop to stay dry.

After buying about four pounds of macadamia nuts and a hula dance dash figurine, not attached to the Audie Rose’s dash, we were off to the park.

We had time after a stop at the visitor center to stop and walk through a lava tunnel on the way back to our ship. To walk through something that once held molten lava was pretty cool, at least that’s what we thought!

All-in-all a fun and informative trip made even more fun by our bus driver, Dave.
